It may not be the first time Nintendo has made a splash with a new console, but the company has made no secret of the fact that it intends to make its own games with a range of new technologies and hardware.
And the Switch is the first big step in that direction.
“It’s our way of saying, ‘We want to do something different,'” said John Koller, Nintendo’s president and general manager of the Americas, speaking at a press event in Toronto.
“We want a new, exciting way to have our own games on our console.”
The company has long had a passion for games, with many of its most recognizable franchises such as Mario and Zelda being developed for the Wii U, the original Game Boy and the DS.
It was also the first console to have a real gamepad, and the only one to feature a 3D feature known as Virtual Reality.
But it’s only with the Switch that Nintendo has actually made something of its games.
The first games to be released for the Switch will be a selection of first-party titles from Nintendo, as well as its own titles, like its classic Mario Kart series.
“The Switch will have a great game library,” Koller said.
“There will be great games from other Nintendo franchises like Super Mario Odyssey, which we haven’t released on the Wii.
We’re going to put that to the test.”
The Switch is due to launch in November.
And Nintendo says that with the games in hand, the company’s “next-generation entertainment system” is well on its way to fulfilling its ambitions.
“We’re excited to bring to life some of the best games of the past on our new console,” Koller said.
