In April of 2018, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger announced that he would be leaving the team in 2018, citing a contract dispute.
The NFL had until March of 2019 to decide if the team would continue playing in the AFC Championship Game in Pittsburgh, and on March 4th, the league announced that it would move the game to London.
Roethisberger, however, still held out on his decision, and he announced on his Twitter account on Sunday that he was taking a different route to the NFL.
In the wake of Roethilberger’s announcement, he was joined by other NFL players, including Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell and wide receiver Antonio Brown, who both expressed their support for Roethles decision to leave.
A petition that was started by Roethiles wife, actress Jennifer Aniston, garnered over 2.4 million signatures by the end of the week.
The petition was signed by more than 20,000 people, including more than 2,000 Steelers.
The Steelers had a strong showing in the 2018 regular season, going 10-4, but they lost to the Washington Redskins in the wild-card round of the playoffs.
The franchise is now in the second season of a three-year contract extension, which expires after the 2020 season.
In 2018, Roethils career passing yards record of 6,527 was broken by the Indianapolis Colts.
