The best shot at making the playoffs, of course, is winning a division title.
But this week’s B/R Super Bowl preview reveals that the biggest threat to the playoff race is the Houston Texans.
This team is loaded with talent and a new head coach, but its offense has yet to match last year’s production.
And the best chance for the Texans to contend for a division championship in 2017 might be the Jacksonville Jaguars, which lost its final eight games last year, including a 42-28 defeat to the Titans.
But even that game is far from guaranteed.
“You can’t say you have a good offense and expect to get a division, but the Jaguars defense is one of the best in the league and the Jaguars offense is among the best teams in the AFC,” B/N NFL writer Sam Monson writes.
“So even if you lose, you can still get in.”
The Jaguars, meanwhile, are a dangerous team, with the league’s worst defense, an offensive line that’s been among the league leaders in sacks per game and a quarterback who has been one of only two players in the history of the game to throw for 3,000 yards.
The Jags will need to improve on those numbers if they want to challenge the Texans for a playoff spot.
But they should be more than capable of beating any of the teams in this year’s playoff picture.
